Customizing Fonts
![]() |
| Set Font Colour |
To change the colour of your text from the default black, you can select the colour palette icon, which is sixth from the right. This will change the colour of your text but will revert to the default colour the next time you enter a chat room. To change only part of the text colour, highlight the words you want to colour in the text edit box and right click to select a colour.
To change the colour of your text permanently, select the 'set font' icon, seventh from the right or go to 'view/options/comics view/change font'. Here you can permanently change your font, font style, size and colour. You should also make sure that the 'show rich text formatting' box is checked (view/options/comics view). Logon Notifications In the 'logon notifications' section, you can be alerted when a friend (or perhaps an enemy) joins the server you are on. To open the window shown on the right, simply go to 'view/automations/logon notifications'. You may add someone by their nickname or part of their nickname. In the nickname box, use the drop down menu where it says 'any', to select 'equals', 'contains' or 'starts with'. In my example as you can see I choose to use 'contains'. Once you choose that, you can then enter a nickname and click on 'add', then 'apply' and finally click on 'ok'. That nickname will be added to your list. Notice the check mark beside the nickname. If you decide to delete this person from your notification list, just highlight their nickname and click on 'delete', 'apply' and 'ok'. You can also add someone to your notification list by user name or net address. The easiest way to get someone's user name or net address is to right click on their nickname or character and select 'get identity' but you may also choose the user list (9th icon from the left). In the 'username' box use the drop down menu once again to select either 'equals', 'contains', 'starts with' or 'ends with' and then enter the user name. Repeat the process if you want to add a chatters net address. The click on 'add', 'apply' and 'ok'. Now in this example I could have entered 'sniff' instead of 'sniffles' and that would let me know when anyone with 'sniff' in their nickname connects to the server. For example, it would notify me of 'sniffles^^' connecting, or 'sniffly' or 'sniffy'. I think you get the idea! lol You may also chose to limit your notifications by selecting a particular server using the network server drop down box. For example if one friend only goes to one specific server, you could limit your notification to that server. By the way, the easiest way to add someone to your notification list (if they are in the same room as you) is to right click on their nickname or character and select 'add to notifications'. FYI: When you choose to right click on a chatter or their nickname and select 'get identity' you will get something that look like this: Sniffles Identity: Sniff@aol.com. In this case Sniffles is the nickname, Sniff is the user name and aol.com is the net address. How to Make A Macro
A macro is the perfect thing to save you typing: for words, phrases, greetings and even URL's that you use all the time.
Go to 'view/automations' and click on the 'general' tab or 'view/macros/define macro'. In the macro section on the bottom of the window, you will first need to define a key combination.. Shown in the example on the right is alt+4. Choose a name for the macro, such as 'hiya' and then type in your macro. Click on 'add macro', 'apply' and 'ok'.
In the example on the right, there is a greeting for an individual. To add any chatters name to a macro, type in %Nickname% (as shown in the example, no spaces and with an upper case 'N').
Symbols and other fun characters can be pasted into your macros too (ctrl+v). It is easy to make hearts, diamonds, shamrocks and others by using the symbol font. You can select this by using the symbol on the far right of your member menu: the one that looks like a pitch fork:

Colours and font style can be changed by highlighting all or part of you macro and right clicking.
To execute the macro, you can right click on a chatter or their nickname and select macro or you can click on a chatter and use your key combination, which in this case is alt+4.
With comic chat you are limited to ten macros.
How to Make A Rule
![]() |
| Automations - Rule Sets |
Making rules is the most complicated part of comic chat but that does not mean it is hard to do. I am going to show you how to make three rules so it should all fall into place and you will feel capable of making your own.
The window on the right shows 'rule sets'. To open this window go to 'view/automations' and click on the 'rule sets' tab. A rule set is simply a bunch of rules grouped together in a set. Comic Chat comes with two sets of rules, general and sample. To view these sets, click on the 'rules' tab and view each set by highlighting them in the 'current rule sets'box at the top of the window. I have deleted the original sets and made a new set called, 'my rules'. In order for your rules to work they must be activated by having a little check mark in the box beside that particular rule set. Rule sets can be deleted, changed, edited, renamed and saved. If someone sends you a set of rules you may choose to add them by clicking on open set and browsing to where you have the set saved.
This rule will notify you when a chatter joins the room you are in. Click on the 'rules' tab and click on 'add rule'. The box shown on the right will come up. In the 'event' box, use the drop down menu to choose 'a user joins a room'. In the nickname box, select '%AnyoneButMe%'. The room will be, '%MyActivatedRoom%' (Note the syntax of the names, with NO spaces and Caps at the beginning of each word, in case you ever need to use one of the variables in a macro, for example). I could have also selected, 'get profile of event's user', which would give me the profile of the user or 'get version information of the event's user'. Other options are available, check them out. When you have completed the rule, click on 'ok' in the 'edit rule' window and click on 'apply' and 'ok' in the Chat Automations rule tab make sure there is a check mark in the box beside the new rule. And viola!!! You have made a rule!
This rule will execute a macro when a user joins a room. Now is the time to tell you that anonymous macros that greet everyone on entry to a room can be seen as annoying and even as a room disturbance so tread cautiously here. I would prefer to see a macro execute for one or two particular chatters but that is only my humble opinion.
Once again, for the event we will select 'a user joins a room'. In the nickname box, you may select %AnyoneButMe%, as shown in the window at right, OR you may insert the name of a particular chatter. The room will be, %MyActivatedRoom%. In the 'actions' box, select 'execute a macro' (of course you must have some macros!!). Then, using the drop down menu, select the macro you wish to use here. Click on 'ok' in the edit rule window and then on 'apply' and 'ok'. Rules are quite versatile. You can choose to play a sound when someone enters a room, or whisper to them. The possibilities are almost endless!
I find this rule to be one of the most fun and amusing. This will execute a random line of text from a file when a chatter says the word 'addict'. Once again, I would suggest you set this rule up to apply to only one chatter because having it 'triggered' all the time can be very annoying.
Ok, for the event in this rule, I have selected, 'A user sends a message to the room'. The nickname will be, %AnyoneButMe% (or an actual nickname) and the room will be, %MyActivatedRoom%. In this case I have selected the word addict. Take note that you must have a file in your Microsoft Comic Chat folder called 'addict.txt'. Under actions, I have selected, 'send a line of file to the room'. Once again it will be, %MyActivatedRoom%. Use the drop down menu to choose your text file. In line number, select %Random%. In the bottom left hand corner, you will see a little box that says, 'delay this action by [?] seconds'. Here I have chosen 5 seconds. This is especially helpful if you want to respond to a sound with a sound of your own. It will delay your sounds so that the other has a chance to finish before yours starts.
Sometimes you can create an endless loop of rules by having a rule respond to someone else's rule which in turn responds to your rules. This can be avoided by checking the 'do not process subsequent rules' box.
To find the advanced settings, go to 'view/automations' and click on the 'rules'tab and click on 'advanced' These settings are pretty self-explanatory. This prevents the room from being flooded with your rule executions. Experiment to find out which settings work best for you.
IRC Commands you can use with Comic
Chat Please note that most of these commands need some
parameters added. Also note that some servers have some of these commands
disabled. The following commands are server
commands and the reply will be sent to your status window. To open your
status window go to 'view/status window'. This is by no means a complete list of
irc commands that work in comic chat. Check the help files for a complete
listing. Keyboard Shortcuts << Back To The Getting Started Page << << Go Back To Basic Configuration << If you have any questions or comments about my site, E-mail me.
