Downloading Microsoft Chat

Click here to download MS Comic Chat.

I would suggest you save it to your desktop so you can find it easily once you have it. Click on the English download button (or the language of your choice) and a 'file download' window will appear.

Click on 'save file' and 'ok'. A 'save as' window will appear (see the window on the right), and you should save this to your desktop by clicking on the desktop icon (by the way, I am using Windows '98, so these directions may vary slightly for other editions) and then click on 'save'. Once the download is complete, you are ready to install.

Installing Microsoft Chat

Once the download is complete you will find an icon on your desktop called Mschat25.exe. Double click on this and a window will open asking if you want to install Microsoft Chat 2.5. Click on 'yes' and the installation process will begin.

Click 'yes' to the license agreement. Another window will pop up and ask you where you would like to install the program. I suggest you go with the default path which is: C:\program files\microsoft chat. Click on 'OK' and once the program is installed, you are ready to connect to a chat server.

Connecting To A Server

Chat Connection Window

To open your comic chat program, go to start/programs/Microsoft Chat and right click. (*tip*If you left click here you are offered the option to make a desktop icon: choose send to/Desktop-create a shortcut)

A 'Chat Connection' window will pop up. In the window under server, it will say Microsoft Servers. This needs to be replaced as Microsoft no longer supports Comic Chat. You can choose from the list of servers at Mermaid Elizabeth's site here.

By going to the 'personal info' tab, you can change or edit your personal information. Please note that the less said the better. You can also select a comic chat character and background from this window.

For an example I am going to use Annex Cafe. Highlight Microsoft Chat Servers with your cursor and type in the new server name, which in this case happens to be: chat.annexcafe.com. You will notice that I have 'show all available chat rooms' ticked. Click on 'ok' and you will connect to the server and a "Chat Room List' will pop up, as shown below:

Chat Room List

From here you can scroll down the list and choose a room to enter. This window will give you the room name and a short description as well as letting you know how many people are in that particular room. Highlight a room name and click on 'join room'. This window will also give you other information such as how many rooms are on the server and who is in each room (as long as a chatter has not set themselves on invisible). Some servers have the 'create room' function diasabled.

If you are having trouble connecting, look at the bottom left side of your screen and you should see the following:

If that is not what you see, try again from the beginning. If it says Microsoft Servers or anything like that, you are not connected to the correct server.

Adding A Network

Adding A Network

I should mention here that it is possible to add a whole network. For example, IRCX-City has five servers in their network but two dns names, as shown in the image on the right (Click here to visit the IRCX-City web page). Generally this is helpful if one server is down because your program will attempt to connect to each one in succesion until it finally connects to one, although in this case, the dns server does most of the 'dynamic' IP switching. What this means is that IRCX-City has five servers controlled by the two DNS entries you see in the image. When connecting, your program will try each server until it connects to one.

To add a network go to 'view/options/servers'. In the network box, add the name of the network and click on 'add network'. Your cursor will automatically move down to servers where you can add each server, one at a time. Click on 'add' at the bottom after each addition. When you have added each server click on 'apply' and then 'ok'.

Mermaid Elizabeth also has some zip flies that will add network servers to your Comic Chat Registry/Connection Files. Click here to download these zip files. Be sure to read the instructions in the 'readme' file that comes in the zip.
